What are delimiters in EDI?

Delimiters are characters used to separate segments, data elements, and components within an EDI message.

Example:

BEG*00*NE*PO12345~

  • * — separates data elements

  • ~ — marks the end of a segment

Why is this important?

When troubleshooting an EDI file, incorrect delimiters can cause parsing or translation errors.

In X12, the delimiters are identified or established through the interchange structure and partner conventions; they aren't necessarily the same in every file.
